The irresistible Technologic, with its catchy disco beat, feels like the next evolution of tracks like Teachers and Harder, Faster, Better, Stronger. Between "Ascension" and "We Got the Power" is Gorillaz most all-embracing material. Repetition and simplicity, or at least a certain kind of innocence, have been at the heart of Daft Punk's music since the beginning, but this formula doesn't always work on Human After All; this is particularly true on the album's softer songs, "Make Love" and "Emotion," both of which are pretty and evocative, but never quite pack the emotional punch that they threaten to.
Human After All was made in six weeks, and sounds like it -- and not always in a good way: the quick-and-dirty recording process and limited palette of grainy synths, vocoders, and guitars do lend a stripped-down, spontaneous feel, but just as often, this minimal approach feels like it's supporting minimal ideas. Sensual and unfettered, he soars through the syncopated track's sleek club funk, merely hinting at the strife that pervades Humanz' bulk. Steam Machine chugs along like a ghost tugboat before cooling out on the moment of respite Make Love. While other white singers appropriate soul to the degree that they now crowd black musicians off the radio, Albarn has essentially handed Humanz over to them to shape in their own image. Fans will recognize the group's technobsession (vocoders abound) and sense of humor.

But mostly there are cameos — some from underground talents long overdue for their mainstream close-up. The album was recorded between September 13th and October 9th, 2004 and was co-produced by Cédric Hervet and Gildas Loaëc.
He should logically be bland-ing out, not making his music and message more radical than ever. A heavy dose of guitars, clever sampling, and shifting rhythms make Human After All the group's most challenging work to date.
