@EMahmoodnejad @GlennAlanBerry OEM vendors don't seem to like the idea of pairing AMD's high end mobile APU with NV's high end GPUs. Core i9, Ryzen 3 vs. Ryzen 5 vs. Ryzen 7 vs. Ryzen 9. Those of you who bought one of these boards over the past few months will no doubt be feeling shafted. You better believe that if you give them an inch, they’ll take a mile, and we’ll be back to where we were just a few years ago. Ultimately the reason for the lockout was down to the BIOS size. X570, for example, would support previous Ryzen 2000, current Ryzen 3000, and future Ryzen 4000 processors – it did not support the original Ryzen 1000 processors.

They can also get a NEW chip design with higher IPC, and double the cores. In fact, this decision by AMD has landed MSI in hot water as they clearly advertised their Max range with support for future AM4 processors. It has ample room for overclocking, PCIe 4.0, Gigabit LAN with Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), Gen 4 M.2 slots capable of unidirectional transfer speeds up to 64 GB/s, and plenty of RGB lighting options to boot.

The B450M is the mid-tier chipset from AMD that'll work well with Ryzen 3 3000 series processors, so long as the motherboard is compatible and you can flash the BIOS. We know AMD didn’t communicate any of this to their customers, either because they didn’t want to or at the time didn’t yet know what the future plans were, and I’m starting to think it’s the latter as it appears board partners were in the dark as well.

Again, I have to give credit for AMD here, in a few short years they’ve progressed desktop CPU performance beyond everyone's expectations. These are set across several families (A-Series, Zen, Zen APU, Zen+, Zen+ APU, Zen2, Zen2 APU, etc), each with their own AGESA platform to deal with, which all has to go into the BIOS. For example, we recently announced that we would not support “Zen 3” on AMD 400 Series motherboards due to serious constraints in SPI ROM capacities in most of the AMD 400 Series motherboards. In the official AMD blog post, they said the following: AMD has no plans to introduce “Zen 3” architecture support for older chipsets. The issue with B450 support is different, people are buying those now, and MAX versions, specifically with the expectation of future support. Apparently we can influence AMD pricing, so hopefully we can finally use that power for good, let's just hope those powers translate beyond just inflating prices of products that we deem too good to be true. @jeffkibuule I would budget for 1.5x the peak power consumption of all connected devices. They will attempt to address the technical challenges, and even though they do not have all the details at this time, it will be worked on. So even if a motherboard vendor had a larger BIOS chip, say MSI had a 32 megabyte chip, then it would actually operate like two partitioned BIOSes and it would get very complicated. At the end of the day, we can't be happy about this move and we strongly urge AMD to reconsider, and at least open up support to 400-series owners. AMD stated that this might be a possibility, but they haven’t worked on those details at this time. But could AMD’s stance on this change between now and the release of Zen 3?

However, AMD has now said no "beta BIOS" option will exist for Zen 3 and therefore the necessary code won’t be made available to board partners.

It's designed for enthusiasts with 5Gb LAN and other advanced features. AMD reiterated to AnandTech that after the launch of B550 into the market, they do recommend the B550 motherboards as the best option for Ryzen 4000 support in upgrades. The vast majority agree that it’s unfortunate but ultimately aren’t all that upset, while 15% think the move is fine and are prepared to upgrade their motherboard.

Obviously those holding out for B550 or who pulled the trigger on an X570 board don’t care, if anything this just re-enforces that they made the right decision. There are still many details to iron out, but we’ve already started the necessary planning.

Part of that announcement included a chart, showing how due to BIOS limitations, certain chipsets would only support certain AM4 processors. AMD today is reversing its decision to limit the BIOSes on the 400-series chipsets.

As a result, we will enable an upgrade path for B450 and X470 customers that adds support for next-gen AMD Ryzen™ Processors with the “Zen 3” architecture. AMD also re-confirmed that we are set to see Zen 3 processors in 2020. AMD's slide clearly states 300 series boards don’t support Ryzen 3000 series processors, when in fact they do. The former one will likely be a default BIOS, which will be picked up by auto-update software, however the latter will likely always be a Beta BIOS, and it will require user intervention.

This is not the first time a technical hurdle has come up with Socket AM4 given the longevity of this socket, but it is the first time our enthusiasts have faced such a hurdle. The fact that a relatively inexpensive B350 board now has the option to support 12 and 16-core processors with relatively large IPC gains compared to the 1st-gen Ryzen parts, well that’s unheard of. Most AMD motherboards are outfitted with 128 megabit (16 megabyte) BIOS chips. First, the degree of compatibility AMD has managed so far is worlds better than anything Intel has provided in recent history. There are 400 series boards with larger capacity BIOSes for that very reason, these boards were designed to ensure future CPU support and I’ll talk more about that in a moment.

In other words, support for upcoming Ryzen 4000 processors on 300 and 400 series motherboards is a no go.

AMD ultimately wanted the 500-series chipsets, the B550/X570, to be a launchpad for the future Ryzen processors. Keep in mind that it may not be possible to compress large parts of the BIOS images, since the code in them may be needed even before RAM to decompress them into has been initialized. Categories.

What they should have said is something like, "We wish we could support Zen 3 on older motherboards, however in pushing the boundaries of CPU performance we ran into compatibility complications with boards designed for earlier Ryzen architectures.

It’s hard to give AMD the benefit of the doubt given how this has played out, not to mention they just refreshed Ryzen 3 with the R3 3100 and R3 3300X. This is one of those motherboards that you shouldn't purchase and likely cannot afford but is one you'd love to own. This is a relatively easy solution and certainly possible to implement. The reason why this is the case is due to a limitation on some of AMD’s early AM4 processors – due to design, they can only ever address the first 16 megabytes of a BIOS chip.

These motherboards will work with the latest AMD Ryzen processors out … This is going to be a ‘promise now, figure out the details later’ arrangement, but this should enable most (if not all) users running 400 series AMD motherboards to upgrade to the Zen 3 processors set to be unveiled later this year. It won't have as many features as X470 and X570, but you've got a sound foundation here for a PC. This decision is very fresh, but here is a first look at how the upgrade path is expected to work for customers of these motherboards.
