Vito comes home soon after, and while the family goes to greet him Michael remains seated at the table alone.
Everything that has been said is pretty much spot on. The juxtaposition of the scene with his family and the scene where he’s sitting alone show how much things have changed since that happier time for the Corleone family. The train scene is a reminder that once, long ago, Michael was an innocent boy. I totally agree with this.
His brothers, his father, his family. Both in the flashback scene and the beginning of the first film we see Michael trying to distance himself from the family business- he wants to be his own man, but he also doesn't want to get involved in the world of crime. In a roundabout way, it is what his father wanted for him - illustrated by the scene in the first Godfather where Vito hoped when Michael would be a Governor or Senator. Thanks again. What is the significance of the dinner table flashback at the end and more specifically, why did Coppola show the train scene (with Michael as a boy) again right after it? Michael forced things and that ultimately caused him to lose everything while winning. Mondays & Wednesdays It was a very profound and sad scene, especially seeing how close Fredo and Michael were and how Fredo was the only family member to openly support Michael's decision to join the military. Ironically, Fredo would betray Michael later on, and the camera angle from a distance shows the breaking of their bond as Sonny stops them from shaking hands. Sonny, his brother who held onto the value of loyalty to family over loyalty to country very strongly, is angry and disappointed to hear about his enlisting. We all know how he treated his sister. Michael wins but what did he truly win?
In the end, he has no one and everything he claimed to fight for (the family) is gone. Fredo takes this opportunity to congratulate Michael and shake his hand, but Sonny slaps his hand away. I saw it again this week (I'm 21) and I was truly blown away at how deep it is. One thing to notice is that when Michael announced that he had joined the Marines, Fredo was the only one who supported Michael in his decision. The camera goes closer and closer to Michael’s face, putting the emphasis on his eyes. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast, News & Discussion about Major Motion Pictures, Press J to jump to the feed. The ending of the third caused me to be tremendously impacted. It's a distinct mark in the family line that will be taking not so much a different path but walking the path differently than those before him. So really I saw the scene as showing how far Michael had come. Despite Fredo accidentally betraying him in Part 2 he is the only one who supported his decision to drop out of college and join the Marines. Michael is choosing country over family, something that simply didnt happen in the old country with traditional Italian families. What is Michael getting at there? Really airbags it and highly recommend this post. The dinner scene is about everything that Michael has lost. Intermezzo: "Time, Who Eats His Own Young", An updated version of this essay is available. But they changed it when Marlon Brando refused to come back for the shooting of it. The scene was rewritten that day.
I'd recommend this article to anyone who has just seen the film. The creative aspect of it though is to have a more personal effect on the audience. It was probably the first time in his life he had disobeyed his father and done what he had wanted, as opposed to following the path that his father had set for him. Michael did enter the family business. Michael joining the Marines was a selfless act in a way.
Michael joining the family business was a negative for Vito but he knew nobody else could take care of the family at that point. His wife and kids. Nearly broke my heart to witness that moment.I never cry from films but that performance had me so engrossed by it's musical beauty and cinematic setting that seeing Michael breakdown became too much for me to hold back. Well done. gmurphy@ccny.cuny.edu, ITF: Aaron Kendall The final scenes of The Godfather Part II are quite interesting, especially in the camera techniques used. The Godfather Part II: "Fruit of Thy Womb", The Godfather Part II: The Horizon of Time, The Godfather: Coppola's Decline of a Family. Michael didn't do this.
I think that the analysis of how the actor's inexperience lent itself to the innocence and sincerity of Mary was spot on.
He acted out of patriotism for his country and a sense of duty rather than loyalty to his family (Sonny scolded him on knowing the difference between blood and country). Spring 2016 Michael is contemplating his guilt for the first time. 2:00pm-3:15pm
I definitely agree with your interpretation. This also means it has been incorporated into the Dramatica Story Expert application itself as an easily referenced contextual example. You can show that scene at the beginning and people might be like "Oh yeah remember that scene, it was foreshadowing..." but you put it at the end and it just kind of breaks your heart a bit because of everything you've seen prior to it.
The shot with Michael alone at the dinner table is foreshadowing that Michael was destined to be alone. You can read the original draft, here. Because Brando was upset how Paramount treated him for the first Godfather he did not show up. Vito is waving Michael's hand...kinda like a puppet. Your email address will not be published. The scene fades into a quick transition where a young Michael is on the train with Vito. The camera goes back out when the Sonny’s daughters in the background yell, “Mommy, Daddy’s fighting again!” This outburst shows the impact of the ongoing violence and aggressiveness would have on the children of those involved in the family business. I think that the analysis of how the actor's inexperience lent itself to the innocence and sincerity of Mary was spot on. He is much more American and doesn’t share the same values as his family does. When Michael reveals he enlisted in the Marines, the camera pans out to a view of the whole family again, showing their immediate disbelief. The last scene was originally going to show Michael fighting with his son about the family (therefore full circle from Michael's own choice) which is why Pacino has on makeup that gives him wrinkles. The camera flips back and forth from Sonny to Michael, which makes the viewer feel the intensity of their speech. Excellent job! Joining the military and going to fight for his country was, to him, the opposite of that- it was him doing something honorable by fighting for his country and against "evil". He has sort of a dead look on his face that makes the scene quite sad yet powerful.
But they lost the light for the day of shooting and decided it worked without the scene. 12-5pm The last shot of the movie, Michael sitting alone, everything and everyone he's ever loved are gone from his life and he stands alone on his throne. There's one thing I'd like to add and it's just my opinion. Location: NAC 6/136, Prof. Geraldine Murphy His desire to be successful is what ultimately made him less successful than his father; Vito remained in the business while caring for his family and keeping his relationships, while Michael’s sole desire for power leaves him completely alone in the end. Excellent commentary. Fredo. To me, the dinner table scene always represented Michael's first steps into the family business. The final scenes of The Godfather Part II are quite interesting, especially in the camera techniques used. One of the best write ups on this film that I’ve seen. He went after deals instead of remaining loyal to his friends back in NY. Recalling a memory where he made a decision not in his family's interests but his own and he is wondering if the decisions hes just made were truly made "for the family" or for himself. The camera being so far gives the frame a lonely feeling, and the noise Michael’s family is making in the background makes Michael seem even more isolated from them. What a wonderful film.
Also, I just want to comment on how amazing Part 2 really is. It also seemed to hallmark a happier period for the family. Your email address will not be published. It is much better than the first in my eyes (which is still a masterpiece). This scene is also a reminder of the innocence Michael once possessed. Required fields are marked *. This is also the day that Michael Corleone’s family discovers that he left college and enlisted in the Marines.
Hagen, the family’s consigliere, can’t believe the news and wonders why Michael would choose this path despite his father’s plans. In the beginning of the flashback scene, the camera is far back from the characters, showing the family as a whole as they prepare the table and talk. Michael did everything for his family, and pretty much lost everything. I promise that you won’t regret it, even if the running time is three hours in total. Her death was horrible. The main thing for me is it shows how much Michael has changed.
The scene was originally going to have Marlon Brando to reprise his role as Vito Corleone. Put the two together, and I've always thought of it as Michael thinking and regretting his choices, and wondering what his life might have been like if he'd stayed in school and listened to his father. When the topic of dialogue turns towards the war and the military, the camera angle changes and the viewer finds themselves in the middle of their conversation. This scene where Michael is seated by himself shows that even from a much younger age, he was always different than his family. It was an act that rejected his father's life of being in the mafia and embraced the idea of being a responsible American citizen. It is true that Michael joining the Marines was an act of defiance of his father and the plan for his life but I do not see it as representing his first steps into the family business. The flashback shows how Michael originally wanted to be his own person and not what his Father and Tom Hagen wanted. An analysis of the themes and symbols found in the movie The Godfather, written in an easy-to-understand format. And of course, the final shot of him being left alone in the dining room represents how his quest for power eventually left him completely alone. The Godfather trilogy is the tragic story of Michael Corleone, and even now, the ending of this series packs an incredible emotional punch. So really I saw the scene as showing how far Michael had come. I'm sure someone more versed in the movie could explain it better than I. Godfather III goes into his attempt at redemption.
In a flashback, the Corleone family is seated at the dinner table ready to celebrate Vito’s birthday. Originally, the scene was supposed to bring all of the original members of the family back together and show how Michael had fully transformed into the man he swore to never be. Other posters have offered good points.
Fantastic analysis, thank you for sharing this.Taught me a few things! It puts in to perspective what we have just seen in the rest of the movie.
It is a story about a complex family, fathers and sons, human nature, and the thirst for power and respect. In a flashback, the Corleone family is seated at the dinner table ready to celebrate Vito’s birthday. Another thing that is significant is that Michael would ultimately be responsible for the deaths of 3 of the people there: Fredo, Carlo, and Sal.
