The Nara period and Heian period are dominated by Gagaku imperial court dance and Shomyo Buddhist chanting. The many processionals and pantomimes of folk theatricals are accompanied by flutes and percussion, the generic term for such ensembles being hayashi. Japanese Original Music Flourished in the Samurai PeriodIn the middle ages, Noh emerged as a masked drama with recitations of dense poetic texts accompanied by a very spare percussion and flute ensemble. The instrument used in Gagaku is called the "gaku biwa," but the biwas used by blind priests are somewhat different from gaku biwa.

Later, secular music also included operalike creations and many varieties of kumi (chamber music for ensemble, voice, and koto) and koto solo (often sets of melodic variations on a short theme, or damono ).

In the early period, the masked drama called Gigaku entered Japan, but now only exists in the form of masks preserved in the Shosoin. The tradition declined greatly over the years. The training of the many new ensembles was in the hands of English, French, and German bandmasters, and new music was created by them or by their Japanese students to match the spirit of Meiji modernism. Incidentally, the original music for Imayo soon disappeared, but in the early Kamakura period, a method of singing the texts of Imayo to the melody of the famous Gagaku piece "Etenraku" was developed, which has left traces in Japanese folk song even today.

The first, used in sacred music and common to all of East Asia, has two modes— ryo, the male mode, and ritsu, the female mode. There are two main streams of Shomyo based in different branches of Buddhism. The rice-planting, harvesting, and other work songs that survive may retain ancient melodies and may also be evidence of the indigenous origins of the yo-in scale systems to which most such music belongs. Kagura may be observed at shrine festivals, and rarely at some temples.

Music of the Medieval PeriodThe medieval period covers the time from the Kamakura period (1185 - 1392), Muromachi period (1392 - 1568), Momoyama period (1568 - 1600) and the early Edo period to around the beginning of the 18th century. However, the suppression of Christianity in that century destroyed the bamboo organs, choirs of mass singers, and most of the other direct Western musical imitations until the Meiji Restoration.

ImayoIn the mid-Heian period, forms of music like Saibara and Roei, which were popular until then, gradually declined. All were recitations on a few notes. In the latter stage of the Heian Period Dengaku troupes were formed under the protection of temples and shrines. Japanese music was presented in middle-school music appreciation courses only some 10 years after the end of World War II. The word 'kagura' is commonly believed to have been transferred from 'kamukura' (a seat for gods). Band music, as part of a military table of organization, had already been tried in Dutch style at a military school in Nagasaki during the early 19th century. After Matthew C. Perry’s arrival in 1853, every foreign delegation to Japan did its best to impress the Japanese with marching bands (Perry added a minstrel show). And pieces from the three ancient countries of Korea and Pohai-gaku are called "pieces of the right". From the earliest stages of Japanese history, poetry and song have been very important and the distinction between the two is not clear. Togaku music, however, which is said to have been introduced from China and is presently played as Japanese Gagaku, is believed to be based on the music played in the Tang period at a party called the Engaku. The newly composed songs with their artificial tunes and moralistic words quickly faded away and eventually were replaced by more-popular children’s school songs based on military music (gunka) from the Sino- and Russo-Japanese wars. The Nara and Heian periods set the standards for poetry with the imperial anthologies Manyoshu and Kokinshu. When the imperial restoration began in the Meiji period, many members of the new administration were from those provinces. Later, symphony orchestras were formed, and Western music became an integral part of the cultural life of Japan. These are Tendai Shomyo and Shingon Shomyo. During the Tokugawa period the Shintō shrines of Edo (Tokyo) developed festival ensembles (matsuri bayashi) for the various major districts of the city. These blind musicians recited the Tales of the Heike to the accompaniment of the biwa and traveled all through the country in the days when memories of the wars between the Genji and Heike clans had not yet faded. Although the themes are often taken from the Tales of the Heike, the instrumental music is much more elaborate. Popular secular music in Japan began in the 16th cent. and continued into the 12th cent. The importation of foreign music, particularly from China, began in the 5th cent. Ancient court music or Gagaku came to Japan from the Asian continent along with religion and a system of government with the establishment of a state centered on the imperial house. The political balance of the Muromachi shogunate soon disappeared and there were decades of civil war between powerful military clans until Japan was unified by Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu in the late 16th century. They also influenced popular music with such genres as rappa-bushi (literally, “bugle songs”) as well as music in the schools. Viewing as a whole both the performance practice and voice qualities of Japanese folk music, one finds a great variety of styles. Chinese is monosyllabic and has tones, while Japanese has long polysyllabic words and does not have tones. Japan Preserves Ancient Asian Music Around the world, the koto and shakuhachi are known as typical Japanese instruments. These stories and characters are taken up time and time again in Noh plays and then later in Kabuki and Bunraku. Even when the political power of the imperial court declined after this time, the court retained its cultural traditions, many which continue to this day.

In the age of the retired emperor Go-Toba, Yukinaga was supposed to perform a dance with seven parts, but forgot two of them and was called the man of the five dances. This was a time when many things that are considered distinctively Japanese developed, including the tea ceremony, rooms with tatami mats and the Noh theater. Most of those combine a bamboo flute with two folk-style taiko stick drums, an ō-daiko barrel drum, and a small hand gong called the kane, or atarigane. Midway between sacred and secular is the music of the No drama, dating from the 14th cent. With that importation came Roman Catholic music and Western musical instruments, the most lasting of which was the double-reed shawm, which survives today as the tuneful accessory of itinerant noodle sellers. The Meiji restoration saw the importation of Western music to Japan, beginning with the brass band. This Yukinaga wrote The Tales of the Heike and had blind priests recite it as they were thought of as "living Buddhas." Priests who specialized in dancing Dengaku were called Dengaku Hoshi (Dengaku Priest). The popularity of Dengaku declined as Yamato Sarugaku (Japanese dance) boomed.
